ENOne previously known but later forgotten barrow cemetery was discovered in Kaišiadorys District and the sites of two destroyed barrow cemeteries were surveyed. These barrows, called by the name of Dovainonys (Kapitoniškės) barrow cemetery V, were already mentioned in a 1971 raport. But this information was ignored. In surveying the locality, one undisturbed and two (?) badly disturbed round mounds were noted. The barrows are 5–7.5 m in diameter and 20–50 cm high. Two barrows were badly disturbed, pits having been dug in the centre of the mounds. The Dovainonys II village barrow cemetery was destroyed in the 1920s. Its remains were investigated in 1932 and 1953. During a field walk of the cemetery’s territory no barrow remains were discovered. But the contours of several suspected barrow sites are visible in an aerial photograph. Earlier excavations allow one to think that flat (?) burials could also exist here. It would be expedient to conduct more thorough investigations in the territory The Visginai barrow cemetery became waterlogged after Kaunas reservoir was created. The remains of the cemetery were investigated in 1977. After excavating 2 disturbed barrows, it was stated that the barrow cemetery had been destroyed. But in surveying the former cemetery’s territory it was noticed that one part, about 11 x 5 x 1.4 m, of a suspected barrow mound had survived. The barrows can be dated only very approximately: The Dovainonys (Kapitoniškės) barrow cemetery V to the mid-1st – early 2nd millennium, the Dovainonys II village barrow cemetery site to the late 1st – early 2nd millennium, and the remains of the Visginai barrow cemetery to most likely the second quarter or mid-1st millennium. The KPD was informed about the survey results. It is recommended that the barrow cemeteries or their remains be included in the NKVR.
