ENIn 2009 KM continued the excavation of Lazdininkai (Kalnalaukis) cemetery by excavating trench 48 (34.45 m2) in the S part of the cemetery. 2 test pits (14.46 m2) were excavated in arable land in the cemetery’s visual protection zone. Three inhumations were excavated in trench 48: burial 102 of a female (an amber spindle whorl, the remains of a miniature ceramic cup, and a fragment of a bronze coil ring), burial 103 of a child (a miniature cup, a flint flake, a necklace made of 2 amber beads and bronze coil beads, a crossbow ladder brooch, and a small iron knife), and burial 104 of a male (a miniature cup, bronze belt fittings (a buckle and a tip), a coil ring, and fragments of an iron sword), dating to the second half of the 6th century. Test pit 1 contained 3 inhumations: burial 105 of a woman (2 type IV cruciform pins and 5 flat bracelets), burial 106 of a woman (2 miniature ceramic cups, 2 coil rings, 2 bronze bracelets with broad triangular crosssection terminals), and burial 107 of a male (3 iron socketed spearheads, a fragment of a small scythe, and a bronze coil ring), preliminarily ascribed to the late 10th – early 11th century. 185 iron and bronze artefacts and artefact fragments from destroyed inhumations and cremations dating to the second half of the 7th–12th centuries were found in the vicinity of the test pit. Test pit 2 contained burial 108, a male inhumation (a horse head sacrifice with an iron bit between its teeth, an iron socketed axe, and a fragment of a type IV profiled brooch) preliminarily dated to the B2 / C1 period. The bronze artefacts found in the vicinity of the test pit are also characteristic of this period.
