Summary / Abstract:

Vilniaus–Panevėžio automagistralės tiesimo darbų metu (XX a. 8-ajame dešimtmetyje) nukasta visa iki tol buvusio didesnio pilkapyno Š dalis. Be to, išlikusioje paminklo dalyje pastatyta sodyba, kurios Š pakraštį kirto žvyrkelis į Sakalniškes.

ENThe excavation of Turlojiškės barrow cemetery (Širvintos District) continued in 2009. Two barrows, which had been disturbed by gas line clearings and were threatened with complete destruction, were investigated. A total of 201.85 m² were excavated. The NE edge of barrow 5(14) had been disturbed by bulldozing the land swin the clearing. Cremation 1, which contained an iron awl, an iron needle, and a bronze crossbow brooch, was discovered and excavated in the disturbed part in 2008. Prior to the excavation, the mound had been greatly flattened and visually appeared to be about 8 m in diameter and about 30–55 cm high. The barrow had no kerb and on its E edge had a 3.15 x 1.55 x 0.3 m pit that contained cremated bones. The pit could belong to this barrow or to a completely destroyed nearby barrow. Another burial, cremation 2, was discovered almost at the barrow’s centre. Cremated bones had been scattered on the base in an area about 2 x 1.5 m in size. No grave goods were discovered in the burial.Barrow 6(15) had been completely bulldozed. Its remains appeared to be about 8 m in diameter. The barrow had no kerb, pits, or ditches. But a pit of about 2.3 x 1.5 x 0.7 m was found in the E part of the mound. It contained one cremated bone and does not seem to be a characteristic barrow edge pit. It had most likely been dug prior to the mound’s creation and then buried during it. A burial, cremation 1, was discovered in the barrow. It had most likely been placed near the former centre of the mound. Some of the bones were placed in a pit about 2.35 x 1.35 x 0.5 m in size and oriented in a NW–SE direction, the rest were scattered above the pit at the level of the base. The burial pit contained a charred iron buckle, an uncharred (?) fragment of an uncertain iron artefact, a charred (?) fragment of a bronze ring, a partially melted fragment of a bronze artefact, and an uncertain artefact (a pottery sherd?). The excavated barrows have been assigned to the East Lithuanian barrow culture. Barrow 5(14) can be dated to the 5th–6th-centuries, barrow 6(15) to the 5th–7th-centuries.
