Meškučių neįtvirtinta gyvenvietė ir laidojimo vieta

LTMeškučių (Marijampolės) neįtvirtinta gyvenvietė rasta 2006 m. žvalgomųjų archeologinių tyrinėjimų metu (žr. ATL 2006 metais, V., 2007, p. 83–84). Ji yra Šešupės kairiajame krante, į ŠR nuo Meškučių piliakalnio. 2007–2008 m. pirmoje viršsalpinėje terasoje esančioje gyvenvietės dalyje buvo iškastos 9 perkasos, ištiriant 531,2 m2 dydžio plotą. Jame aptikta per gyvenvietę tekėjusio upelio vagos dalis, įvairios gyvenvietės struktūros su dviejų laikotarpių kultūriniais sluoksniais, datuojamais II tūkst. pr. Kr. – I tūkst. I puse (žr. ATL 2007 metais, V., 2008, p. 94–96; ATL 2008 metais, V., 2009, p. 49–52). 2009 m. buvo tęsiami gyvenvietės tyrimai. Į V nuo 2007–2008 m. ištirto ploto ištirta 15 perkasų ir šurfų (šurfai 10–24), kurių bendras plotas 685,64 m2. Armenyje aptikti vėlyvi XX a. radiniai: degtų plytų gabalai, žiesta ir glazūruota keramika, stiklo šukės, įvairūs geležiniai dirbiniai. Kultūriniame sluoksnyje bei ištirtose struktūrose rasta lipdytos keramikos šukių, molio tinko gabalų, degintinių žmonių kaulų, titnaginių dirbinių [p. 59-60].

ENIn 2009 the excavation of the Meškučiai (Marijampolė) unenclosed settlement continued. The settlement was found during a 2006 field evaluation. Another 15 trenches (trenches 10–24 with a total area of 685.64 m2) were excavated in 2009 to the W of the area excavated during 2007–2008. The ploughed layer of the trenches contained late 20th-century finds: pieces of red bricks, thrown ceramics, glass shards, and various iron artefacts. The cultural layer contained sherds of hand built ceramics, pieces of clay daub, cremated human bones, and flint artefacts. 2 fire sites, a load of stones, the remains of fireplaces, postholes, charcoal stains, and stone cairns, a clay pot with small pieces of charcoal and cremated human bones, and other structures were also found during the investigation. A 4.3 x 2.12 m pyre site with a layer up to 18 cm thick was found at the bottom of the ploughed layer in trench 22. It contained small pieces of charcoal, many cremated human bones, sherds of hand built ceramics, and several stones. It is thought that this object was used for cremating human remains. On the basis of the discovered finds the Meškučiai unenclosed settlement has been preliminarily dated to the second half of the 1st millennium BC. The cremated human bones found in the greater part of the settlement and beyond its boundaries are also ascribed to the same period. Clearly a cremation and collective burial site for human remains existed in this area.
