Summary / Abstract:

Pagal pilkapių išvaizdą ir įrengimą Kidarų pilkapyną galima datuoti I tūkst. antrąja puse – II tūkst. pradžia. [...] [p. 457, 459-460].

ENKPC archaeologists in the spring of 2009 surveyed Albinava and Daukšiai barrow cemeteries (Trakai district), and in the spring of 2010, Arliškiai and Kidarai barrow cemeteries in Šalčininkai district. During the surveys, the areas occupied by these cemeteries were determined, the corners of these areas and the coordinates for the centres of the barrow mounds recorded using a GPS receiver, and the barrows measured and photographed. In Albinava barrow cemetery were count ed 7 barrows. The barrow mounds were 5–9 m in diameter and from 0.2–0.9 m high. All of them were low flattened hemispheres, a couple had almost flat tops, and the remains of the ditches surrounding them were visible at the base of two of them. Stone kerbs created using medium-sized stones, parts of kerbs, or signs of separate stones that had been removed were seen on the slopes of all of the barrows or beside them. The kerb around one barrow apparently had two storeys. Some of the barrow mounds had flattened out, two had been disturbed and deformed by the pits that had been dug in them, and the side of one had been spread out. According to the appearance of the barrows, it is apparently necessary to date Albinava barrow cemetery to the mid second half of the 1st millennium. In Arliškiai barrow cemetery were counted 18 barrows. The barrow mounds are 5–10 m in diameter and 0.2–1 m high. A couple are somewhat doubtful. All of them are low, flattened hemispheres. One has a barely flattened top. The remains of the ditches and pits encircling them are noticeable near the base of several barrows. Many of the barrows are flat on top and deformed. Fairly small or somewhat larger stones from the kerbs are visible at the sides or near five barrow mounds. On the basis of appearance and construction of the barrows, Arliškiai barrow cemetery should obviously be dated to the mid second half of the 1st millennium. In Daukšiai barrow cemetery were noted 4 disturbed barrows. The barrow mounds are 5–9 m in diameter and from 0.3–1 m high, three being low flattened hemispheres, and one more of a low flattened conical shape. The remains of destroyed stone kerbs that existed here: individual stones or small groups of them roughly are visible on the slopes of all of the barrows or at their feet. The mounds of two barrows have flattened out somewhat; all four barrows are deformed and have been disturbed: the sides of two of them have been spread out somewhat, one is extended, and the side of one has been dug out. According to the appearance and construction of the barrows, Daukšiai barrow cemetery can be dated to the mid second half of the 1st millennium. In Kidarai barrow cemetery were counted 9 barrows (one of which is somewhat doubtful). They are from 3–5 m to 10–20 m from one another on a fairly level site that is somewhat lower than the surrounding area. Four barrows are to the NW of the forest road, in a young growing forest that had been harvested several years previously, and five are to the SE of the aforementioned road in a forest that had been completely harvested one or two years previously and replanted. The barrow mounds are 8–12 m in diameter (one even up to 20 m) and 0.5–1 m high (the largest up to 1.6 m). All of the mounds are low flattened hemispheres, two of them, including the largest, being somewhat flat on top. Three mounds have flattened out, the sides of four including the largest have been more or less spread out, and two mounds, including the largest, have been damaged by vehicular traffic. All of the mounds have been damaged recently in ploughing the furrows for replanting the forest. On the basis of the appearance and construction of the barrows, Kidarai barrow cemetery can be dated to the second half of the 1st early 2nd millennium.
