ENThis monograph describes research of leisure time and holidays of the local population living near Vilnius in the last third of the 20th century to the second decade of the 21st century in areas that differ according to type and territorial-administrative attribution, population size and ethnic composition. The aim is to analyse how, thanks to leisure activities and holidays, social interaction is maintained in locations of different sizes and ethnic and religious composition, and what the cultural expression of this interaction has been over the perspective of time. To meet this aim, several objectives were raised that are henceforth developed by the monographs authors in separate chapters of the book. Before presenting the research, Žilvytis Šaknys seeks to survey the ethnographic idiosyncracies and the belonging of the researched locations to particular ethnographic regions in Lithuania. The other objectives relate to the analysis of leisure and holidays in villages, towns and cities in the Vilnius surroundings: to analyse the social interaction of people from different ethnic and confessional groups within their families and among neighbours (Rasa Paukštytė-Šaknienė), among their colleagues (Irma Šidiškienė) and among their friends (Žilvytis Šaknys). [...].This monograph is probably the first in Lithuanian ethnology studies to cover leisure time and holidays not only of Lithuanians, Poles and Russians, but also of the non-Christian confessions represented by Karaims and Tatars. If readers want to find additional comprehensive accounts of these particular holidays and leisure times, please refer to the literature indicated by the authors. When analysing holidays, the authors decided to apply the ritual-in-so- ciety theoretical paradigm, where the holiday is seen as a means of organising and reorganising social contexts, not just as an expression of social relations, but as a model for social behaviour as well (Rao 2008: 143-160). When seeking to reveal the organisational and creative force of these holidays, we distinguish separate social groups: the family, neighbours, colleagues and friends. We hold to this principle when analysing leisure time, too. The research was conducted in 2017-2021 as part of the Lithuanian Institute of History programme “Leisure time, celebrations and rituals in the Vilnius surroundings. Social and cultural aspects”. As part of this programme, publications of a smaller scale on these very research themes were also released, and they too contribute to the findings made by the authors of this monograph. [...].
