Summary / Abstract:

LT2013 m. VU tęsė Kašučių (Kretingos r., Darbėnų sen.) senųjų laukų (UK 12304) archeologinius tyrimus (žr. ATL 2001 metais, V., 2002, p. 20−22; ATL 2006 metais, V., 2007, p. 430−432; ATL 2011 metais, V., 2012, p. 567−569; ATL 2012 metais, V., 2013, p. 572−575). Tyrimams pasirinkta apie 3,5 m (Š−P), 4 m (R−V) dydžio krūsnis, buvusi aptvaro P dalyje, 65 cm į R nuo 2012 m. ištirtos akmenų krūsnies. Prieš tyrimus žemės paviršiuje matėsi apie 60 apsamanojusių įvairaus dydžio (20x15x10, 20x20x5, 39x26x12 cm) akmenų. Ant krūsnies augę krūmokšniai buvo iškirsti, jos paviršius nuvalytas. Po to pamatuota 5x5 m dydžio perkasa, orientuota ŠR (5°)-PV (195°) kryptimi. Du anglies ėminiai nusiųsti Poznanės radiokarbono laboratorijai AMS datavimui. Gautos tokios datos. ENIn 2013, VU, with the participation of students from the University of Copenhagen (Denmark), continued the excavation of the Kašučiai (Kretinga district) fossil fields. University of Tartu (Estonia) professor Valter Lang and Danish archaeologists Prof Klavs Randsborg, Dr Lasse Soerensen, and Dr Anders Pihl visited the expedition’s participants and participated in the excavation for several days. Two objects were selected for excavation: a stone fence baulk and the cairn inside it. But due to continuing work at other objects only one stone cairn in the S part of the fence was excavated. The cairn was 4x3.5 m in size, but only its N part (5x2.5 m) and its vicinity were completely excavated, the surface of the S part being cleaned off and recorded in a drawing and photos. It was determined that the cairn was 3.8 m long, ranging in height to up to 62 cm at its centre. On the edges the stones were piled in two levels, in the centre in four to five. There was dark brown blackish clay loam between the stones. The cairn had been erected on yellowish clay loam. About 2000 stones were counted in the excavated part. During the excavation charcoal was collected from the bottom part of the cairn and from the cairn’s vicinity for C14 testing. The largest concentration of charcoal was found at a depth of about 30–40 cm in its bottom part. Sterile soil, i.e. light brown clay loam, was unearthed at a depth of about 40–50 cm. Two charcoal samples were sent to Poznań Radiocarbon Laboratory for AMS dating. The charcoal taken from the vicinity of the cairn dated to 1110±30 BP and that from the cairn’s central part to 1655±30 BP. Also two unknown cup mark stones were found in vicinity of investigation area.
