Pirmasis lietuviškas saldainių ir šokolado fabrikas "Birutė"

LTPrieš 110 metų, 1911 m. gegužės 21 d. Šiauliuose buvo įsteigta pirmoji lietuvių saldainių dirbtuvė Birutė, vėliau išaugusi iki saldainių, šokolado, marmelado ir kavos fabriko (veikė su pertraukomis nuo 1911 iki 1944 m.)’. Galima tvirtinti, kad tai buvo lietuviškos pramonės pradžia Šiauliuose. Pirmieji lietuviškos saldainių pramonės žingsniai buvo nelengvi. Istorikas J. Puzinas nurodo, kad saldainių dirbtuvę Birutę Šiauliuose 1911 m. įkūrė Šiaulių parduotuvių tarnautojai Antanas Gricevičius ir Vladas Vaitkus2. Sudėję 500 rublių, jie tuometinės Dvaro gatvės namo rūsyje 1911 m. atidarė nedidelę dirbtuvę saldainiams gaminti ir pavadino ją Birute [p. 39].

EN110 years ago, on May 21, 1911, the first Lithuanian candy workshop “Birutė" was established in Šiauliai, which later grew into a candy, chocolate, marmalade and coffee factory (it operated intermittently from 1911 to 1944). Vladas Vaitkus was the founder and owner of the factory and also a public figure. It can be stated that this was the beginning of Lithuanian industry in Šiauliai. “Birutė” was a typical small workshop where initially, in addition to the owners and their family members, only two candy wrappers worked. It had primitive equipment and technology, and handwork was predominant. During the interwar period, “Birutė” workshop grew into a chocolate, candy and marmalade factory. After the Soviet occupation of Lithuania in 1940, the property of the “Birutė” chocolate and candy factory was nationalized, the former confectionery factories “Birutė”, “Rūta" and “Fortūna” in Šiauliai were merged and named “Rūta”. The building of “Birutė” chocolate and candy factory on the current Stoties Street in Šiauliai has recently been restored and renovated. It now houses a hotel and various other businesses.
