Barrows and hillforts beside the Nemunas
Summary / Abstract:

Pagal išvaizdą visus žvalgytus Matiešionių pilkapius galima datuoti I tūkst. II puse-II tūkst. pradžia, Matiešonių piliakalnį-I tūkst. II puse. Visi minėti archeologijos paveldo objektai KPD ketvirtosios kultūros paveldo vertinimo tarybos sprendimais įrašyti į NKVR (Matiešionių pilkapyno II teritorija prijungta prie Matiešionių pilkapyno (UK 31120) teritorijos ir sudaro su juo vieną 8 pilkapių pilkapyną). ENIn the autumn of 2014, KPC archaeologists surveyed Marvelė hillfort II (Kaunas district), which had been unknown up until then, Matiešionys hillfort, Matiešionys barrow cemetery II, and a separate hillfort (Birštonas municipality). All of them are on the banks of the middle reaches of the Nemunas. Marvelė hillfort II was created on the left bank of the Nemunas on a promontory on the edge of an upper terrace above the floodplain. The enclosure is oriented almost S–N, is an irregular square about 40 m long and 10–12 m wide. At its S end, a bank about 15 m long, 16 m wide, and up to 2 m high was created. The hillfort’s steep scarp is 15–25 m high. Based on its appearance, Marvelė hillfort II dates to the late 1st early 2nd millennium. Matiešionys Hillfort was created between two ditches on a highland promontory. The enclosure is square, 10 m long SW–NE, 9 m wide, and surrounded on all sides by a bank that is at least 30 cm high and by a 3–4 m wide, up to 2 m high, and 14 m wide bank, which descends on the NE edge to a somewhat lower second hillfort enclosure–terrace, which is a smaller, roughly 12 x 12 m square, and descends on its SW edge to a 16 m wide, 1.5–2 m deep ditch separating the hillfort from the remaining highlands. The hillfort’s steep scarps are roughly 10–12 m high.Matiešionys barrow cemetery II contains five barrows arranged at intervals of 5–60 m. The mounds have a low, flattened semicircular shape and are from 7.5–8.5 m to 10 m in diameter and from 30–80 cm to 1.2 m high. The majority have ditches or signs of them beside the base. The mound of the separate barrow is 10 m in diameter and 50–60 cm high, has a low, flattened semicircular shape, and seems to have traces of a ditch beside the base. Based on appearance, Matiešionys Hillfort and the barrows date to the second half of the 1st – early 2nd millennium. All of the surveyed archaeological properties were entered in the NKVR.
