[...] [p. 487, 489].
ENDuring the second stage of the excavation, the vicinity of the remaining 20 buildings of Kaunas 6th Fort and the road sites were investigated and 30 test pits of various sizes (nos. II–XXIII) (a total of 293 m2 ) were excavated. The buildings and installations investigated beyond the barracks are arranged in three rows. Cobblestone and brick paving was discovered in the first line at the entrances to the munitions bunkers/magazines and the passages of the central postern. The road running past the munitions bunkers was only paved near bunker XX. Elsewhere the road’s surface consisted of fill layers of gravel and rubble. Brick drainage wells that are now filled in were found near bunkers V and XXII. An unfilled earthen well has survived near bunker XXII. The second line, which is separated from the first by a 7 m high earthen barrier, consists of cannon casemates and the nearby postern openings of the munitions bunkers. The postern openings of munitions bunkers X, V, XXII, and XX are beside cannon casemates IX, VI, XXI, and XIX. Filled in drainage wells were discovered near the postern openings. The interior of these structures was paved with cobblestones. No traces of the former surface were found near the entrance of any of these structures, only five cobblestones, which could be part of the dismantled cobblestone paving, having been found near the right opening of cannon casemate XI.In the third line, it was impossible to investigate the central caponier, the two demi-caponiers at the corners, and the rearward-facing firing gallery, all of which are in the defensive ditch, because they are either standing in water or the groundwater level is at the ground’s surface. It is essential for the project for the restoration and adaptation of the fort to foresee the restoration of the buildings’ interiors, the passages, and the road levels while preserving the surviving paving and restoring the surviving drainage wells.
