ENIn 2015, the search for the burial site of German soldiers during the Second World War and the work of exhuming the remains occurred in a park in the city of Mažeikiai. First two trial trenches (a total of 10 m2 ) were excavated. After discovering a burial site, eight 25–28 m long, 2.5–3 m wide trenches were later excavated based on the arrangement of the rows of graves. In all about 470 m2 were unearthed. During the exhumation work, six rows of 17 graves were discovered. Of the 102 remains, 97 were exhumed. The removal of the remaining five burials was prevented by trees in the park (but the work will be done in 2016). The cemetery occupies a roughly 23 x 23 m area. It was determined that the individuals had been interred at a depth of 0.9–1.2 m from the existing ground’s surface with their heads to the SE. The rows of graves were separated by distances of 1.7–2.5 m, the graves in the rows by 30–90 cm. The majority of the soldiers (69) were interred in wooden coffins. The skeletons had survived very poorly, especially those in the coffins. Fractures of the legs and arms, amputations, and shrapnel in the bones were frequently encountered. Clothing elements, ammunition, the remains of military gear, and personal items were discovered. ID tags were found in 66 graves. The remains will be reburied in the German military cemetery in Klaipėda.
