[...] [p. 277].
ENDuring the field evaluation, three test pits (a total of 10 m2 ) were excavated. At the excavated locations, geological layers were discovered only in test pit 2, where they were at a depth of 160-170 cm. The cultural layer consisted of fill layers of gravel with sandy loam taken from the castle’s S defensive ditch. The foundation of the building at Papilio st. 3 was unearthed in test pit 3; it is older than the upper part of the present building and should be dated to the 16th century. No archaeological finds were discovered, only chips of human ribs having been found in the bottom layer of gravel in test pit 2. At the site of heating line being repaired, 19.2 m2 were surveyed. Cultural layers had survived only at the E end of the line where, down to the bottom of the ditch, layers of sand and mixed gravel and sand were discovered under the layers of asphalt and crushed stone. A 1.15 m wide foundation datable to the 16th century was found near the building at Papilio St. 3. This was a continuation of the foundation of the N wall of the building at Papilio st. 3 and had survived after the W part of the Sapiega house had been demolished in 1929. Two masonry walls, perhaps from the basement stairwell, had been built during a later reconstruction on the inside of the N foundation. Few finds were discovered, mostly brick and flat roof tile chips. A diamond-shaped, green glazed floor tile was an exceptional find.
