ENIn 2016, the remains of a Second World War german soldier were exhumed in Kuktiškiai forest (Utena district). A 10 m2 trench was excavated and the remains of a german pilot removed. A dogfight occurred in the vicinity of Kuktiškiai in the summer or autumn of 1944. One of the german planes crashed into lake Dumblis, at a spot near its shore. The local inhabitants buried the discovered pilot in a meadow, which later became a forest. The remains were discovered at the location indicated by the witnesses. The aviator had been buried at a depth of 40–60 cm in a 1.4 x 0.7 m pit. The burial had been disturbed by recent illegal digging. The bones of the upper part of the skeleton were disarticulated, only the leg bones having remained undisturbed. The remnants of aviation gear and clothing were found among the disturbed bones in the pit’s fill. The remains belonged to a 20-25 year old male. Bullet entrance and exit holes were discovered in the skull. This shows that the pilot could have shot himself. The remains will be reburied in Vingis Park military cemetery in Vilnius.
