[p. 165, 172].
ENIn 2016, an excavation and survey were conducted in the vicinity of the Royal palace of the Lower Castle in Vilnius. Nine areas (a total of roughly 1906.5 m2 ) were excavated down to various predetermined depths. 19th–20th century surfaces were recorded in the majority of the areas. Below these surfaces, fill layers from the period of the palace’s demolition (turn of the 19th century) were mostly discovered in some areas. Earlier, late 16th–17th century horizons were reached only in areas 1 and 7. The wall of a late 19th early 20th century masonry structure and the remains of first half of the 20th-century structures were discovered in area 1 beside the revetment wall of Castle Hill. Two male burials, which should probably be connected with the Cossack and Russian garrison besieged in the Vilnius Castles in the mid 17th century war, were found on a paving fragment dating to the late 16th early 17th century. Paving fragments dating to the first half of the 17th century were discovered in area 7. A male skull with the crown cut off (possibly during an autopsy) was found in area 2. During the investigation, 9228 16th–20thcentury finds were collected: fragments of stone architectural elements, structural ceramics, vessel and panel stove tiles, and household pottery, metal and glass artefacts and artefact fragments, various other items, coins, bone-antler artefacts, and animal bones.
