ENIn 2017, the exhumation of the remains of Second World War german soldiers was conducted at a private residence in Žečkalniai village (Šakiai district). According to the inhabitants, circa 1944 the owner of the residence brought the remains of two or four fallen german soldiers from the neighbouring area and buried them on his plot. A 14.3 m2 trench was excavated and the remains of three soldiers buried neatly in one pit were discovered. They were 20–40 years of age. Only changes connected physical loads were identified in the bones of two of the three individuals. The third individual, who, at 20–25 years of age, was the youngest of the three, was discovered with a perforating gunshot wound and a slashing wound on the skull as well as perimortem bone fractures on the skeleton. Both of his calves were also bound with elastic bandages. Uniform and gear elements, hygiene paraphernalia, personal items, and identification tags were discovered near all of the remains. On their basis, it is possible to judge that the soldiers belonged to reserve battalions. The remains will be reburied in Aukštieji Šančiai military cemetery in Kaunas.
