2016 investigation at Užupio st. 24
Summary / Abstract:

LTTyrimų metu nustatyta, kad šioje sklypo dalyje ankstyviausias kultūrinis sluoksnis susidarė XVII a. pradžioje. Nuo XVII a. II pusės šioje vietoje veikė kapinės, pagal radinius priskirtinos katalikams. XIX a. statant namą jos suardytos. [...] [p. 474].

ENIn 2016, an investigation (26 m2 evaluated, 93 m2 excavated, and roughly 300 m2 surveyed, a total of 419 m2 ) was conducted on the plot at Užupio St. 24, Vilnius. A 0.4–2.2 m thick, early 17th early 20th century cultural layer was recorded. Two disturbed burials were found. The anthropological analysis determined that the isolated human bones belonged to at least 15 individuals. The list of finds includes 109 bulk 17th–18th century finds (household pottery, glass vessel shards, panel stove tile (Blattkacheln) fragments and handforged nails), 17 17th–19th century coins, 26 small finds: 17th–18th century knife blades, scissors, a thimble, pendants, rings, 17th–19th century earthenware pipe bowls, a second half of the 17th early 18th century religious medal, an 18th–19th century pendant medallion, a c.1601-1607 Nurnberg (Hans Krauwinckel II) (1586–1635) jeton, and a 17th–18th century round fitting. In all, 152 finds were registered and given to the LNM. The investigation determined that the earliest cultural layer in this part of the plot formed in the early 17th century. This was the site of the first building (or buildings?), beside or inside which paving was laid. A fire apparently destroyed the building soon after because the deepest discovered paving was covered by a layer of charcoal and a fairly large quantity of charcoal was recorded in the pits. Beginning in the second half of the 17th century, a cemetery operated at this location, which, based on the finds, should be considered Catholic. The cemetery was destroyed by the construction of a house in the 19th century.
