Summary / Abstract:

[...]. [Iš teksto, p. 79]

ENIn 2016–2017, the field evaluation continued at the suspected site of Courland’s Poys Castle between Liepų and Pievų Streets in the city of Klaipėda. The castle was mentioned in at least three different 13th century written sources, but the castle’s site has yet to be located. Three trenches totalling 47 m2 were excavated in 2016 and two trenches totalling 39.5 m2 in 2017. In 2016, two cultural layer horizons (with oval and line shaped soil marks and signs of burning) were discovered in trench 1 but no artefacts that would allow the layers to be dated. Traces of anthropogenic activities in the form of regular, oval shaped patterns in the soil, signs of burning, and disturbed layers were recorded in trench 2. A burned piece of granite, a small piece of iron slag, and a 17th-18th century potsherd were found in it at a depth of 50-65 cm. Two flint artefacts: a flake with a worked surface and a scraper, a broken sandstone spindle whorl, a piece of iron slag, and 12 sherds of hand built pottery, two of which were partly thrown, were discovered in trench 3.Traces of a cultural layer were discovered in both 2017 trenches. The artefacts discovered during their excavation include four flint flakes with signs of use, nine sherds of Late Iron Age hand built and partly thrown pottery, and several potsherds dated to the 18th-19th centuries and the first half of the 20th century. The results and artefacts from the 2016-2017 excavations support the author’s hypothesis that a possible site of Poys castle exists in the investigation area. [From the publication]
