Summary / Abstract:

ENPolish director Grzegorz Jarzyna introduced Lithuanian actors to his creative principles during the rehearsals of the play Soliaris 4. Using Stanislaw Lem’s novel Solaris, several screen adaptations and the issue of psychological co-dependency as the basis for the dramaturgy, Jarzyna suggested the actors should become part of the dramaturgy, i.e. personalise the text of the play during the process of its creation and “visualise” the characters as their own memories. Tying in this requirement with the content of the novel, the director presented memory as the play’s main theme and issue during the rehearsals. By asking how we experience our memories, the director posed an indirect question to the actors: “How do we experience our characters?” - especially since Jarzyna considers the character, when it is played by an actor, to be a “third kind of being who is neither the actor nor the character”. Based on the creative process of the specific performance, the article aims to reconsider known acting methods and offer a theoretical framework for contemporary directing and acting practices that could substantiate the intuitive steps an actor takes in creating a character as a “memory”. By participating in individual and collective rehearsals for Soliaris 4, by observing the actors as they work on creating the characters and the way the characters develop within the dramaturgical and directorial fabric, the author aims to grasp the connection between practice and theory, identify the strategy of creating characters as memories, and point out the key elements in the process of the actor becoming the character.
