Summary / Abstract:

ENIn my contribution, I shall deal with the shares for Slavic and Baltic comparative philology directly delivered from or at least mediated by Franz Bopp. I shall start with his Comparative Grammar (VG 1833), where I proceed with the comparison of the different editions of the Comparative Grammar of the Sanskrit, Zend, Greek, Latin, Lithuanian, Old Slavic, Gothic and German in various parts of the morphology of the verb. I concentrate on three cases in which one can clearly see that the role of Slavic and Baltic (here represented with the biggest languages Lithuanian) was from the very beginning on – even in the Conjugationssystem from 1816 – already an integral part of the system, but was spelled out in a more explicit way in the title of the second edition of VG (1835). The second part of this contribution seeks to present the students and colleagues of Franz Bopp who contributed to the Slavic and Baltic comparative grammar, and the third part of this paper gives an overview of the Influential Impact (“Wirkunsgeschichte”) of the Franz Bopp Foundation funded in 1865. The survey of the sponsored projects proves the fact that the Baltic and Slavic languages played a crucial role for the reconstruction and study of Indo-European. [From the publication]
