Summary / Abstract:

[...]. [Iš teksto, p. 600]

ENIn 2018, investigations were conducted at Second World War German military grave sites in Kelmė, Šiauliai, and Telšiai Districts. 743.3 m2 were excavated and the remains of 110 German military personnel were exhumed. Ten military graves were discovered in Beržėnai II (Kelmė District). All of the interred individuals were males, 9 of whom had perimortem injuries. One instance of a body that had been ripped apart was recorded. Finds were discovered in nine burials, but based on the grave site’s context, all of the individuals are held to be members of the German Wehrmacht. It is thought that members of the Großdeutschland Division could have been interred at this grave site. One grave pit, which contained two individuals, was found in Janapolė (Telšiai district). Only one find was discovered in the grave pit: a dental bridge in the skeleton of individual 2. That German soldiers had been buried there was confirmed only by information supplied by witnesses. The remains of 20 military personnel were exhumed in Kaimalė (Kelmė district). Almost all of the remains, it is thought, for sanitation reasons, were showered with lime or some other chemical promoting decomposition and so only the individuals’ long bones and sometimes skull fragments had survived. Finds were discovered in all of the graves. Based on the finds, it was established that all of the individuals had served in the German military. The grave pits of 17 individuals were found in Kartokliai (Kelmė district). All of the remains belonged to males. Signs of trauma were established on eight skeletons, mostly injuries related to artillery fire. Finds were discovered in all of the graves. Based on the finds, it was determined that all of the individuals were soldiers who had served in the German military and died in the summer of 1944. 12 of the 17 soldiers were interred with ID tags.Based on the information supplied by them, it is thought that soldiers and NCOs serving in a motorised unit were buried at this site. The graves of 61 individuals were discovered in Liaudiniškė (Kelmė district). All of the remains belonged to males. Injuries were identified on 15 skeletons and amputations on 3 skeletons. The deaths of two individuals were connected with bullets found in the graves, two with discovered shrapnel. Finds were collected in 60 graves. Based on the finds or the grave site’s context, all of the individuals interred at the grave site were soldiers serving in the German military who died in 1944, and based on witness data, at the front along the Dubysa. 52 ID tags were found in the graves.
