Summary / Abstract:

ENIn 2018, investigations were conducted on three plots in the central part of the city of Varniai. On plot I, a survey was conducted in 1184 m2 and an excavation in 58.2 m2. A 16th(15th)–20th-century cultural layer up to 0.3–2.1 m thick was discovered. The peaty basin of Lake Lukštas probably existed until the 18th century in the S–SE parts of Medininkų Square. A wetland site in the city’s centre apparently prevented the formation of a market square there, but the city’s second market square, which was triangular, appeared there in the second half of the 17th century by adapting a widened segment of present-day Dariaus and Girėno Street for it. On plot II, 610 m2 were surveyed and 12.5 m2 excavated. A 0.3–1.1 m thick, 19th– 20th-century cultural layer was found. The earlier cultural layer horizons were not reached during the earthwork. On plot III, 855 m2 were surveyed and 18 m2 excavated. A 0.3–1.1 m thick, 19th– 20th-century cultural layer was found. The earlier cultural layer horizons were not reached during the earthwork. The preliminary site of the bookshop of A. Zavadskis was discovered beside S. Daukanto Street. [From the publication]
