LT2019–2020 m. Panevėžio centrinėje dalyje, Respublikos gatvėje ir Laisvės aikštėje, vykdant viešųjų erdvių tvarkymo darbus, atlikti detalieji archeologiniai tyrimai. Respublikos gatvėje 2019 m. ištirta perkasa 3 (bendras plotas 27 m2), Laisvės aikštės PV dalyje ištirta perkasa 4 (bendras plotas 40 m2). Bendrai žvalgytas 2350 m2 plotas. Archeologiniai tyrinėjimai Panevėžio miesto istorinėje dalyje, Respublikos gatvėje ir Laisvės aikštėje bei jos prieigose vyko nuo 2007 m. (ATL 2007 metais, 2008, p. 368– 370; ATL 2008 metais, 2009; p. 369–371; ATL 2013 metais, 2014, p. 507; ATL 2015 metais, 2016, p. 547). Perkasoje 3 nustatyti 2 kultūrinių sluoksnių horizontai. Viršutinis – pilkų žemių su smėliu ir smulkiomis griuvenomis XIX a. II pusės – XX a. pradžios kultūrinis sluoksnis buvo 20–35 cm storio. 21–38 cm gylyje rastos 2 monetos (Rusijos 1874 m. 2 kapeikos ir XIX a. poluška (?)), žiestų keraminių indų šukių, koklių fragmentų, pašto plombų. Nuo 38–40 cm gylio fiksuotas XIX a. pabaigos – XX a. pradžios akmeninis grindinys. [...] [p. 285].
ENIn 2019, two trenches were excavated in Panevėžys: a 27 m2 trench on Respublikos Street and a 40 m2 trench in the SW part of Laisvės Square, and a total of 2350 m2 were surveyed. Two cultural layer horizons were identified in the trench on Respublikos Street. The upper from the second half of the 19th – early 20th century was 20–35 cm thick and contained stone paving from the late 19th – early 20th century. The lower, 18th – early 19thcentury one was 35–40 cm thick and contained 18th-century stone paving and a fieldstone foundation. Finds characteristic of the late 17th–19th centuries: a brooch, coins, a postal seal, a belt buckle, glass shards, sherds of thrown ceramic vessels, stove tile fragments, a pellet, nails, and animal bones, were discovered in the trench. The trench excavated in Laisvės Square revealed a rich, 25–37 cm thick, late 17th–18thcentury cultural layer with finds, well preserved second half of the 17th–18th-century stone street paving, and finds characteristic of the 17th–18th centuries: a flint striker, a lock, a coin, horseshoes, horseshoe nails, leather clothing elements, glass shards, sherds of hand thrown ceramic vessels, stove tile fragments, nails, and animal bones. Sterile soil was reached in the trench at a depth of 1.38–1.61 m. A 15 cm thick, 18th–19th-century cultural layer and layers disturbed by digging in the 20th century were identified during the field survey in Respublikos Street. First half of the 20th-century stone paving was unearthed in the surveyed area in Laisvės Square. Part of a 15 cm thick, 17th–19th-century damaged cultural layer was identified in the SW corner of the square.In the rest of the investigated area, layers disturbed by digging in the 20th century and fill layers were recorded to a depth of 90 cm. 16th–19th-century finds were discovered: coins, ornaments (a small medal, a ring), shotgun pellets, postal seals, a small weight, a small medal, buttons, horseshoes, a candlestick base, and sherds of hand thrown ceramic vessels.
