Investigation of the inner perimeter of the Klaipeda Castle site
Summary / Abstract:

LT2018 m. buvo suprojektuota nauja Priešpilio gatvė Klaipėdos mieste. Jos teritorijoje planuojama pakloti naujus inžinerinius lietaus, buitinių nuotekų, vandentiekio, elektros, apšvietimo, šilumos tinklus. Minėtų darbų vieta pateko į saugomas Klaipėdos piliavietės (UK 10303), Klaipėdos pilies ir bastionų komplekso (UK 848) bei jo apsaugos nuo fizinio poveikio pozonio, Klaipėdos senamiesčio (UK 16075) bei Klaipėdos senojo miesto vietos su priemiesčiais (UK 27077) teritorijas. 2018 m. spalio – 2019 m. lapkričio mėnesiais aptariamoje teritorijoje vyko žvalgymai. Po naujai suprojektuota gatve planuota pakloti naujas inžinerinių tinklų trasas, kurios patenka į buvusios Klaipėdos bastioninės tvirtovės (XVII a. pradžia) griovių teritorijas. Pilies grioviai, kurių vietoje yra projektuojama nauja gatvė, buvo užpilti po I Pasaulinio karo. [...] [p. 172-173].

ENIn 2018 Priešpilio Street in Klaipeda was redesigned, including the installation of new storm drain, domestic sewage, water supply, power line, lighting, and heating networks, all of which, according to the project, lie within the area of the former moat of Klaipeda Castle (early 17th-century bastion fortress). The moat, on which the new street was built, was filled in after World War I. After 1920, various production activities were conducted on the grounds of Klaipeda Castle. The aim of the 2018–2019 research was to record the existing cultural layers and structures and collect finds during an excavation down to a planned depth. At an approximate depth of 1.6–2 m, the excavation recorded various-sized (50–70 cm in diameter) unworked stones laid in a roughly 30 m long trench in a layer of black soil obliquely (with a NE orientation) to the NW-oriented section of Priešpilis Street. Judging from the 1768 plan of Klaipeda Castle, it is clear that this is the inner edge of the former moat. The finds, which date to the second half of the 17th– 20th centuries, show that the layers were mixed when the moat was filled. The row of the stones, which varied in size, being roughly 3070 cm in diameter, continued 24 m further to the NW. The slope reinforcement stones began to be unearthed higher and higher until they were even less than 40 cm from the ground’s surface. Most were found in dark soil. This slope reinforcement dates to 1756, when the work of maintaining the castle and reinforcing the slopes began. Masonry structure 6, roughly 6x3 m with a NW orientation, was unearthed at the end of the row of stones and could be part of the bridge marked in the 1785 plan. The top was only about 45 cm from the ground’s surface. Its NE wall had been demolished in two places.During the excavation of the NE side of masonry structure 6, three wooden poles or piles were uncovered in a layer of grey sand at a depth of about 2 m. Poles 1–2 were 30–35 cm high, about 20–25 cm in diameter, and all three poles were about 1 m apart. The castle bridge shown in the 1785 plan coincides with the locations of these poles. According to the available data, these discovered bridge fragments date to the 18th century. No cultural layer was distinguished during the excavation, only mixed layers with finds from the 17th–20th centuries. These consisted of 18 masonry fragments, 9 paving fragments, and 3 castle bridge piles. The masonry fragments date to the 20th century and were ascribed to the warehouses of the Baltic Shipyard, except for masonry structure 6, which, together with the wooden bridge piles, were attributed to the 18th century on the basis of the old plans. The slope’s stone reinforcement was also attributed to this period. The paving fragments, based on the finds, can also be attributed to the 20th century.
