ENThe article presents the data of opinion survey of Utena district municipality residents and the results of the analysis related to the attitude of the residents towards food waste and readiness to sort food waste and the importance of sorting. 50% of respondents believe that food waste should be separated from the total waste stream, 38% say that they would sort if there were a separate container for food waste, 12% of respondents do not think food waste should be sorted. According to research, 88% of respondents tend to separate food waste from the overall waste stream. Respondents indicated the main reasons for the separation of food waste from the overall waste stream: 46% say that food waste sorting protects nature and its resources, 44% believe that it helps to reduce waste management costs, 4% of respondents state that separating food waste from the general waste stream is necessary because everyone sorts, 1% would do this because it is fashionable, and 4% of respondents are unaware why food waste should be separated from total waste stream. Unfortunately, even 15% of respondents are unaware that food waste must be removed from packaging. Consequently, they constantly contaminate containers with packaging and such waste is not suitable for composting. The knowledge of the residents was found to be superficial, since 35% of respondents are unaware that not all food waste can be put in the container for biodegradable waste, and 32% do not know whether the concepts of biodegradable waste and food waste are the same. Low quality of sorting reduces the chances of recycling. During the research 510 respondents have been surveyed: 76 % urban, 24 % rural. According to the data of the Lithuanian Department of Statistics, at the beginning of 2019 the population of Utena district was 37257 residents (68% in urban areas, 32% in rural areas), i.e. 16484 households.During the research, residents living in Utena city and district were interviewed.
