Summary / Abstract:

LTT. ENIn 2020, a group of LNM archaeologists, in connection with amelioration work on the complex’s structures, conducted a field evaluation and survey in a 189.78 m2 area at 3 locations on the plot at T. Kosciuškos St. 3, which belongs to the museum. In trench 1, the cultural layer was excavated down to sterile soil, at the other locations down to the planned depth. A layer earlier than the 19th-century was recorded only in test pit 3 (where unworked stone paving preliminarily dated to the late 18th – first third of the 19th century was unearthed) while the other test pits revealed only a 19th–20th-century cultural layer down to the excavated depth of 0.15–1.5 m. Several new cultural heritage objects and structures were identified. Surveyed area 2 yielded 1920s–1950s ceramic brick steps and isolated human bones from burials disturbed in digging the hill’s slope and in forming the terraces. Trench 1, which was excavated beside this area, revealed the disturbed burials of 2 adults (without pathologies) and isolated bones from a disturbed third burial. The burials may be from the late 18th – early 19th-century (based a lime mortar fragment discovered in the first burial’s fill soil, a hand-forged coffin nail in the second burial, and data from historical sources about the course of the plot’s development), but because neither the ground’s surface from that time nor any grave goods were found, substantiated dating was not possible. In surveyed area 3 the remains of a narrow-gauge (60 cm) rail line were discovered in laying the utility lines. The object could be part of the Cathedral Square – Antakalnis wagon line, which was laid in 1932 to transport the construction materials needed to repair the cathedral, which had been damaged by the 1931 flooding by the Neris.
