ENThe visual material, enabling one to form a through picture of the development of the 19th century Vilnius theatre, is greatly scarce - just a few sketches for theatre set design, kept in the Lithuanian Art Museum and the manuscript Department of Vilnius University. They are undated and cannot help much for the restoration of the development of theatre plastic peculiarities, therefore, a particularly significant group of sources - reviews of performances and comments in the press. All the comments on performances are the reaction of the elitarian public of the period to theatre art; they should not be fully identified with the tastes of ordinary theatre public. Press correspondents were different in respect of their education, erudition, travelling experience, therefore, their views and those of the majority of public might have not coincided. The things that gave rise to their dissatisfaction or fascination might have presented no interest to the local public. There also might have been cases when the producers of a performance and critics were striving for different things, therefore, a greater part of reviews are two critical, fault-finding, demonstrating the critic's wiltiness, observation and education. Anyway, the opinion of the critic of that period makes possible to analyze performances on the basis of the relationship between the existing and desirable picture, and the employment of literary critical material reveals the impact of the visual side of the performance on the spectator, bringing out this psychology and through its reflections points out the peculiarities and their transformations of the 19th century artistic atmosphere. The studies of theatre reviews or comments on performances of that period make possible to perceive how much the set design created a theatre view and how much specific features of the spectator's imagination determined its peculiarities as well as to feel the stimulators of the active imagination. In this publication, the author presents a group of sources which reflect the history of the Vilnius theatre - reviews and discussions published in "Dziennik Wileński" between 1815 to 1819. Their factual data are often mentioned in publications on the 19th century Vilnius theatre, however, not everything has been used, discolouring the biographies of personalities in the world of the Vilnius theatre of the period. Besides, little is known about the actors mentioned in the texts, and the authors of the texts are still hiding behind pretentious pseudonyms. It is reasonable to believe that the literary whole of these texts on the theatre, published in Lithuanian for the first time, will once again stimulate to return to this important period of Lithuanian culture.
