Summary / Abstract:

Gintališkės dvaro parkas pradėtas kurti apie XVIII a. ENIn 2020, one 10 m2 trench and 22 test pits (31 m2) were excavated and a roughly 62 m2 utility trench was surveyed in the town of Gintališkė (Plungė District, West Lithuania). Cemetery II, which was unknown, was discovered in trench 1, test pit 21A, and during the survey. The disturbed layers in trench 1 revealed several bronze artefacts from a disturbed burial: a round strap distributor, parts of a buckle, a bracelet with tapered terminals, and artefacts reminiscent of part of a child’s bracelet shank. The finds date to the 9th–13th centuries. Three remnants of a coffin plank oriented close to E–W with the head to the W were recorded at a depth of about 1.05–1.2 m in the SW part of trench 1 and in test pit 21A. The coffins were 1.6–1.7 x 0,55 m (burial 2) and 90 x 40 cm (burial 3). The remains of handforged, corroded nails were discovered in the burials and atop them. Burial 1 was discovered during the survey. The burial was an inhumation (?) in a disturbed plank coffin oriented NE–SW. A bronze 3-strand twisted wire neckring, chaplet (?) coils and fragments of them, and the remains of two teeth were recorded above a fragment of a coffin plank. Burial 1 dates to the second half of the 12th century. Bronze archaeological finds: a penannular brooch with poppy head terminals and part of another, part of a bracelet, and a ring fragment, as well as a whetstone were discovered in the vicinity of burial 1 and in the spoil.
