Varpių senovės gyvenvietės

LT2020–2021 m. Varpių k. (Jonavos r., Šveicarijos sen.) senovės gyvenvietės teritorijoje, būsimo „Rail Baltica“ geležinkelio vietoje ištirta 81 perkasa, kurių bendras plotas 2600,5 m2. Iki šiol archeologiniai tyrimai Varpių senovės gyvenvietės teritorijoje vyko du kartus: 2015 m. R. Vengalis su tyrėjų komanda žvalgė Varpių senovės gyvenviečių vietose (LIIR, f. 1 7675). Varpių senovės gyvenvietės I vietoje augo pieva, radinių neaptikta. Pati gyvenvietė žinoma jau seniai – minima LAA, kur nurodyta, jog čia aptikta akmens ir bronzos amžiumi datuojamų radinių (LAA, 1974, t. I, p. 76), tačiau jos tiksli vieta neaiški. Varpių senovės gyvenvietėje II šalia Neries upės buvusiame dirbamame lauke žvalgymų metu rastas titnaginis gremžtukas ir 3 nuoskalos (ATL 2015 metais, 2016, p. 458– 465). 2019 m. spėjamose Varpių senovės gyvenviečių I ir II teritorijose ištirti 63 1x1 m dydžio šurfai (J. EN81 trenches (2600.5 m2) were excavated at Varpiai Old Settlement (Jonava District, Central Lithuania). A 70 cm thick cultural layer, the upper 20–35 cm of which had been destroyed through ploughing, was recorded. Below that, a layer of grey soil up to 40 cm thick and containing small pieces of charcoal was excavated. A layer up to 30 cm thick of brown gravelly soil was also excavated in the N part of the investigated area. 988 sherds of hand built pottery with brushed, rough, burnished, and smooth surfaces were discovered in these layers. Several earlier flint artefacts (Fig. 5), the bow of a bronze eye brooch, and sherds of later 17th–19th-century thrown pottery were also discovered. Based on the finds and the dating of the charcoal samples, the settlement’s cultural layer and sunken structures date to the 2nd century bc – 6th century ad.
