Summary / Abstract:

LT2021 m. atlikti detalieji tyrimai bei žvalgymai Panevėžio senosiose kapinėse (UK 21138) Venslaviškio g. 6. Šioje vietoje buvo numatoma atlikti gydymo paskirties pastato 2D2p (Š korpusas) kapitalinį remontą, tvarkyti aplinką. Detaliųjų tyrimų metu ištirtos 4 perkasos su išplatinimais: 1 – 15,51 m2; 2 – 12 m2; 3 – 10 m2; 4 – 100 m2 (bendras 137,51 m2 plotas), žvalgytos 9 tranšėjos, iš viso 778,6 m2 plotas. Istorinių šaltinių duomenimis, 1507 m. Panevėžio senamiestyje pastatyta medinė Dievo Motinos vardo katalikų bažnyčia (Maksimaitienė O., Pirmosios žinios apie Panevėžio miestą, Lietuvos TSR Mokslų Akademijos darbai A serija, 1961, t. 2, p. 125). Bažnyčios pastatas buvo kuklus: nedidelis, vienerių durų, 6 langų, su bokšteliu ir 3 nedideliais varpais. Viduje buvo 3 altoriai, o bažnyčios stogas dengtas lentomis (Ragauskienė R., Panevėžys XVI–XVIII a., Panevėžys nuo XVI a. iki 1990 m. Panevėžys, 2003, p. 42). [...] [p. 135].

ENIn 2021, an excavation (4 trenches totalling 137.51 m2) and a field survey (in 9 trenches totalling 778.6 m2) were conducted in the old cemetery at Venslaviškio St. 6 in Panevėžys. Trenches 3 and 4 yielded 53 inhumations containing 17 males, 17 females, 2 adolescents, and 11 individuals of indeterminant sex and age: 9 burials in 2 rows in Trench 3 and 44 burials at different depths in 2 horizons in 6 rows in Trench 4. The burials had been made at a depth of 0.56–1.13 m from the current ground’s surface. A 2.6x1.45 m concentration (on the E side of Trench 4) of bones from destroyed burials as well as isolated examples of such bones were also discovered. It was determined that that the individuals had been interred more densely in the W and central parts of Trench 4 than on its E side. The majority had been interred in an extended supine position in a coffin, usually with the hands placed at the sides, on the pelvis, on the abdomen, and on rare occasions, even higher. They were mostly oriented W–E or SW–NE with the head towards the W (210–277°). Burials one atop another and group burials were recorded. A large percentage of the burials had been largely destroyed or damaged during previous earthwork and through the digging of pits beside burials. 19 burials in Trenches 3 and 4 contained grave goods: rings, coins, belt buckles, knives, medals, and coffin nails. Based on the discovered grave goods and artefacts, it is possible to assert that the excavated part of the cemetery was used during the 16th – early 17th centuries. During the investigation, the other soil layers and the removed soil yielded 139 16th–20th-century finds: coins, medals, potsherds, glass container shards, belt buckles, a leather purse–bag, and various metal artefacts.
