Summary / Abstract:

LTPanevėžio miesto istorinėje dalyje (UK 31872), tarp Vasario 16-osios g. 20–27, važiuojamoje dalyje buvo tiriamas senkapis, preparuoti žmonių kapai. Detaliai ištirtos 3 perkasos su išplatinimais: 1 – 50 m2; 2 – 112 m2; 3 – 50 m2. Bendrai detaliųjų tyrimų metu ištirtas 267 m2 plotas, žvalgytas 250 m2 plotas. Tyrimai atlikti vykstant centrinės miesto dalies tvarkymo darbams: rekonstruojant gatvės važiuojamąją dalį, keičiant šaligatvių dangą. [...] [p. 130].

ENIn 2021, an excavation (3 trenches with extensions, a total of 267 m2) was conducted in an old cemetery in the carriageway between Vasario 16–osios St. 20–27 in the historic part of the city of Panevėžys, yielding 42 inhumations containing 13 children, 15 males, 9 females, 2 adolescents, and 5 individuals of indeterminant sex and age as well as isolated bones from destroyed burials. Two rows of burials in several layers were recorded in the trenches. It was determined that the individuals had been interred more densely in Trench 2, especially in its SW part, than in Trench 3. The majority had been interred in an extended supine position in a coffin. While the position of the hands was not determined in every case, mostly they were placed on the pelvis, at the sides, or on the abdomen. The majority had a SW–NE or W–E orientation with the head towards the W. The individuals had been interred at a depth of 24–155 cm from the recorded surface of the ground. While intense disturbances from the second half of the 20th century were recorded in Trench 1, a fragmentally surviving, 20 cm thick, 19th – early 20th-century cultural layer was identified. A disturbed 90–107 cm thick, 17th–18th-century cultural layer was discovered in Trenches 2 and 3. Sterile soil, a layer of undisturbed sand, was reached at a depth of 31–246 cm in Trenches 1–3. Four burials contained grave goods: coins, glass beads, and a whetstone. Based on the discovered grave goods and artefacts, it is possible to assert that interments had occurred there in the 17th – early 18th centuries. The individual layers and removed soil yielded a total of 73 17th–20th-century finds: potsherds, coins, a postal seal, and a copper alloy lid.
