2020–2021 Investigation at the Liškiava Hillforts
Summary / Abstract:

LT2020–2021 m. Dzūkijos nacionalinio parko ir Čepkelių valstybinio gamtinio rezervato direkcija įgyvendino „Liškiavos piliakalnio ir alkakalnio tvarkymo ir pritaikymo lankymui projektą“. Tvarkybos darbai vyko Liškiavos piliakalnio (UK 3658) ir dvarvietės (UK 30286) teritorijose (Varėnos r., Merkinės sen.). Atnaujinamos ir naujai įrengiamos infrastruktūros vietose atlikti detalieji tyrimai ir žvalgymai. 29 vietose ištirtas bendras 76 m2 plotas, žvalgyta apie 2500 m2 teritorija. Tyrimų metu aptikti radiniai perduoti LNM. [...] [p. 56].

EN29 locations (totalling 76 m2) were excavated and another roughly 2500 m2 were surveyed at the Liškiava Manor and Hillfort sites (Varėna district, S Lithuania). The excavation of 21 areas on the hillfort and at its foot revealed a 0.1–2.6 m thick cultural layer, which can be divided into 3 horizons: mid-1st millennium, first half of the 2nd millennium, and 16th–17th centuries. A layer that was especially valuable scientifically, namely a black cultural layer, up to 80–90 cm thick, that contained pottery with rough surfaces, animal bones, and various structures from a former settlement: the remains of a clay stove, a hearth, postholes, etc., was discovered under 1–2 m thick layers of clay and sand at the hillfort’s e foot. 8 areas were excavated at the manor site and at its e foot. the hilltop yielded a 1.1–1.6 m thick cultural layer, which can be preliminarily divided into 3 horizons: 1st millennium bc, 15th–16th centuries, and second half of the 17th century. The lack of data until now about the hill’s habitation prior to the 15th century was corrected by the cultural layer’s important base horizon with its pottery with brushed surfaces that allows the hill’s first habitation to be preliminarily dated to the 1st millennium bc It is hillfort II. The remains of a simple wooden structure, i.e., a masonry wall foundation that was discovered in the e part of Area 25, was preliminarily dated to the 17th century and preserved in situ.
