Summary / Abstract:

ENIn 2021, a field evaluation was conducted at Kabeliai Stone Age Settlement 7 (Varėna district, S Lithuania). 11 test pits (28 m2) were excavated at the shoreface of a former lake. Under the 20–30 cm thick surface overbank layer, all of the test pits yielded an archaeological layer containing artefacts that had accumulated on the lake’s sandy bed at the shoreface and later, after the shoreline had retreated, in the peaty deposits (Figs. 2–3). The finds were distributed disproportionately in the archaeological layer, the majority of them and all of the bones having been discovered at the base of the peaty layer and on the surface of the very fine sand (former lake bed). The archaeological layer was thinnest closer to the foreshore. the thickness of the peat sediment and thus also the archaeological layer increased towards the SW, the thickest layer (2.3–2.4 m thick) having been recorded in test pit 10. the overbank deposits and archaeological layer in the test pits excavated at Kabeliai Stone Age Settlement 7 yielded 432 archaeological finds and ecofacts: 234 (4478.5 g) flint, 45 (538 g) pottery, 82 (12362.7 g) stone, and 2 wooden finds as well as 50 (1398 g) animal bones. The organic and zooarchaeological material was wonderfully preserved by the waterlogged soil. AMS 14c dating established that the archaeological horizon with the greatest find density consisted of sediment from the former lake and had formed at the least from c. 9000 bc to the 4th millennium bc (Mesolithic). The samples, which were taken at the base of the peaty sediment stratigraphically above that, date to 4000–3000 bc. The 2000–1900 bc date of the wooden stake and the sparse flint finds in the peat layers attest to later continuing activity in the Metal Age. Human remains: an occipital bone dating to c. 4700–4500 bc, were also discovered in the Stone Age horizon.
