Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article compares the personalities of the Lithuanian philosopher Vydūnas (1868-1953) and Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1961) and their ideas of religious psychology; the concepts of human essence, faith, God, good and evil, salvation, and post-mortem existence are discussed. Already in their childhoods, both future thinkers were characterised by a sense of the mystery of being, constant thinking about religious things, and at the same time the realisation that most people don’t care about and don’t understand anything. Both lived independent spiritual lives, which developed their confidence in their own intuitions and the decisions of the mind based on them. Both Vydūnas and Jung recognised the great (one could even say - decisive) influence of the unconscious forces of nature on human life, both saw the very important role human essence (das Selbst) played, and they revealed the importance of personality growth “from within”, or in Jung’s terms - the meaning of individuality. For both thinkers, religious faith meant a very deep personal experience, and both emphasised the importance of such experience for internal harmony and linked the religious decline of Western civilisation to the inner decline of people - turning away from one’s true self. Jung revealed the archetype of God, the objective idea of God in the human psyche, while to Vydūnas God meant the possibility and hope of the highest spiritual being. Thus, both thinkers are brought closer together by a special openness to spiritual experiences, and the main subject of their interest is the spiritual depth of man and the religious symbols expressing it.
