"Mano gyvenimas buvo gana dramatiškas": neskelbtas pokalbis su literatūrologu, teatrologu Dovydu Judelevičiumi (1925-2020)

ENI had the pleasure twice of visiting Professor Dovydas JUDELEVIČIUS (1925–2020) at his home on Vokiečių Street in Vilnius, at the end of 2006 and on 24 January 2007. I spoke with my lecturer, who taught a course on literary translation to MA students on the literary studies programme at what was then Vilnius Pedagogical University. The cultivated and warm professor often quoted various poems and translations of plays in the original language. It was enchanting and wonderful to witness! When I interviewed him in 2006 about Shakespeare studies in Lithuania, the professor also talked about his childhood, his school years in Kaunas, and his studies. However, when I transcribed the conversation, he thought it was far too long, and he suggested discarding the parts of the interview about events and experiences in his life. The article on Shakespeare studies ‘Dovydas Judelevičius on W. Shakespeare: At the Intersection of Theatre and Literature’ was published in ‘Literature and Art’ (27 April 2007) soon afterwards. However, the unpublished parts of our conversation had to wait until I recently rediscovered them, and they seemed interesting and unusual. When I started to prepare the unpublished parts of the interview, I could hear the professor’s calm and reassuring voice again, examples from literature sounded in my mind, and Judelevičius’ ready smile appeared before my eyes.
