Summary / Abstract:

ENThe saying ‘When arms speak, the Muses are silent (in Latin Inter arma silent musae), when considering the Russian war against Ukraine, means that artistic performances and actions of a social and political nature are currently more relevant than other themes in art. But life goes on: exhibitions continue according to plan, the Venice Biennale has opened as usual, and an invitation has been announced to the 2022 ArtVilnius Contemporary Art Fair. A couple of years ago at the fair I saw works by the painter Vytenis LINGIS (b. 1956), and was surprised by the significant change in his means of expression. Today he feels he has finally found his niche, his own painting language, and the tools, not only to express his ideas, but also to have a strong emotional effect on the viewer. The long search has led him to artistic freedom in their use. Nevertheless, the priority of his life has not changed: seeking what is good, as opposed to suffering, brutality and darkness. The art critic Danutė ZOVIENĖ writes about the principles in Lingis’ work, his development, and the impact of the environment on artistic expression.
