ENFolklore provides an opportunity to look at old age from the perspective of long-lasting collective life. Ethnologist Gražina Kadžytė shares insights about old age, relations between young and old people, loneliness and death on the basis of Lithuanian ethnology and folklore. She reminds us that the media often mentions in a negative context the fairy tale motif of how a family elder is taken on a sled to be left the forest, but no one remembers anymore how this tale ends - when son dares not to execute such an order from their ruler, during hard times the old father left at home saves the entire kingdom from starvation with his wise counsel.
