Vilnius in G. Kanovich's novel "Forgotten Jews park"
Summary / Abstract:

ENG. Kanovich’s novel «Forgotten Jews Park» was published in 1997. Though different toponyms are mentioned in the novel, the central one is the space of Vilnius, to be more precise, the space of small Bernardine park. Being the place of meeting of four old Jews in Kanovich’s novel, this park is inseparably connected with the category of memory. However, the second motive, related to the space of Bernardine park, is the motive of the End, when time is out of joint, when the category of memory itself becomes irrelevant. One of the reasons why Vilnius space becomes exhausted is its filling in with new values. It is no mere chance that one more space, the space of town cemetery or the burial place of Jews perished in World War II, is actualized in Kanovich’s novel «Forgotten Jews Park». Division of Vilnius space is obvious: the Lithuanian space is joint with the future (though there is no clear author’s evaluation of this future). Jewish Vilnius is the space of the Past. All the signs of this space, connected with the Jewish component, become the space of the Exodus in G. Kanovich’s novel «Forgotten Jews Park».
