Summary / Abstract:

ENThe main aim of this article is to analyze the importance of cultural (ethical and aesthetic) values for the process of creating a cartographic work. Values and the emotions associated with them are treated here as primary for the genesis of the map, and therefore decisive for the deep connection of the map with the concepts and ideas relevant to culture. The analyzed example is the monograph written by the nineteenth-century polish researcher Konstanty Tyszkiewicz, entitled Wilija i jej brzegi (Dresden 1871). The work contains an account of an author’s scientific journey on the Neris River in 1857, the purpose of which was to research and measure the river, and the result – a detailed geographical and historical description of the river, engravings and collection of folk songs. During this trip a map of the Neris River (Mappa rzeki Wilij od jej źródła aż do pierwszej przystani handlowej w Kostykach) and an atlas of river shals were also made. The author of the map and atlas was Jerzy Szantyr – a member of Tyszkiewicz’s team. The author shows the rooting of this research project in the romantic culture and literature, especially in the tradition of its main creator – poet Adam Mickiewicz. Keywords: romanticism, river, map, journey, historiography, interdisciplinary research. [From the publication]
