Coin hoard from Labanoras (Łabonary) in Lithuania
ENThe circulation of money in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the late medieval times – the 14th and 15th centuries – is still quite enigmatic for researchers of the history of money. One of the few researchers who devoted more attention to this topic was Soboleva N.A., who wrote a series of articles on monetary circulation, including the role of the Prague groschen, which dominated this area in the first decades of the 15th century (Soboleva N.A., 1970). In work from 1985, about money systems of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, this scientist postulated to comprehensively elaborate late medieval numismatic finds from this historical region (Soboleva N.A., 1985. P. 205–212). Borys Paszkiewicz wrote about the circulation of the earliest Lithuanian coins in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and its neighboring countries over 15 years ago (Paszkiewicz B., 2007). However, the issue of the influx of Wenceslas IV’s Prague groschen in the first decade of the 15th century to the territory of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (Soboleva N.A., 1970. P. 112–115; Kiersonowski R., 2008. P. 271–272) and their co-circulation with a local small coins at this time requires further study. So far, we have few works about small finds from the territory of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, which include a Bohemian thick coin, including counterfeits from the period (Kučera L., 2011; Kučera L., Cycoňová L., 2013), however, they are insufficient for further research. After almost four decades, the postulates of Soboleva N.A. should be fulfilled, and the first step to explore the described issue will be the development of numismatic material collected in the National Museum in Vilnius, which is rich in late-medieval hoards containing large Bohemian groschen.
