Extracurricular language learning during study abroad in Lithuania
ENHigher education institutions in some European countries can encounter the seemingly paradoxical situation of wanting both to promote the local language and develop internationalisation through English. The chapter sets out to investigate the attitudes of foreign students studying at a Lithuanian university towards extracurricular language learning activities in both English and Lithuanian. Participants learning both languages indicate the value of extracurricular activities for language learning. Despite problems regarding level of mastery, learners of Lithuanian typically see the local language as an asset for better social inclusion and cultural awareness. More generally, this chapter contributes to our understanding of linguistic engagement in a smaller/newer SA destination offering English as medium of instruction. Referuojamos DB Scopus.
