ENThe article presents a study on the experiences of students of the Faculty of Music at the LMTA in distance learning, which reveals how students perceived their studies during the COVID-19 pandemic. The chosen object of the study – challenges of distance learning from the perspective of LMTA students’ experiences – implied the aim of the study to analyse, reflect and summarise the aforementioned experiences, assuming that students’ preferences and expectations, as well as the highlighting of the expressions of their emotional experiences will allow for the future improvement of the organisation of the study process. The student questionnaire survey revealed that contact work is an important and indispensable prerequisite for ensuring the quality of music studies. It was found that distance learning significantly decreased students’ motivation to learn, and that students lacked not only subject-specific, but also psychological support and encouragement to overcome the challenges of distance learning. While distance learning provided a sense of security and calm for some students, a larger number of students reported a clear predominance of anxiety and stressful situations. According to the students, the pandemic showed that distance learning has both positive and negative features, but the negative features are clearly more pronounced. Studying by distance learning alone deprives students of the opportunity to participate in a unique creative process, to learn from an authentic environment and to achieve high professional results. The students who took part in the study gave suggestions on what could be changed and improved in case distance learning needed to be adopted again, they also expressed their expectations for more productive cooperation between lecturers and students based on mutual support and understanding. Keywords: challenges of organising distance music studies, distance learning experiences of LMTA students, emotional well-being of students and lecturers under the conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic.
