ENMaurice Ravel argued that his music is designed to be re alized rather than interpreted (Konttinen 2008: 206). This is clearly noticeable in the composer’s scores, where clear and specific per formance references capture the limitations of free interpretation. Ravel’s thought opens up a wide horizon for discussion. The ques tion arises in what ways and with what elements we can purpose fully apply the “conductor analysis” in order to achieve a quality in performance. Dispute – whether the score should be interpreted or realized is significant in the application of conductor analysis. A no less important role is played by the genre of the work, the cir cumstances of the creation of the opus, the cultural context, the ep och, the traditions of performance and the individual ways of score notation. Taking these aspects into account, we can roughly answer the question about the accuracy of the realization of a particular score and the possibilities of interpretation freedom. In examining these issues, it is first expedient to review the phenomenon of the conductor analysis and the conductor’s communicative role from the point of view of collective music making. With these aspects in mind, the aim is to reveal the complexity of conductor analysis. Keywords: conductor analysis, realization, interpretation, conducting, communication.
