ENIn this article the intersections between western classical music and jazz are examined in the period of the 20th and 21st centuries. The author of the article is trying afresh to look for the influence of jazz on contemporary American and European composers, presenting the most interesting cases of collaboration between jazz and other music genre performers with classical composers in specific contexts. Different kinds of projects between western classical music and jazz are presented along with the definition of “third stream” music. The keystone of the article is one of most characteristic and newest examples of double bass performance in an ensemble – the 'Bang on a Can' phenomenon. The activity of 'Bang on a Can All-Stars' band, known for its most innovative music, is crossing the boundaries between classical, jazz, rock, world, and experimental music over the last thirty years. Founding member of the band and bassist Robert Black is in the spotlight through analysis of his artistic, creative activity and excerpts of his interview. Seven ways of double bass performance are presented with detailed descriptions of bass playing going with music examples from the 'Bang on a Can' repertoire including many different composers representing various styles, alternative techniques and shifting roles.
