ENThe Gimnazjum of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth in Wilno functioned between 1915 and 1940. Around 1,017 girls took their matura (leaving certificate) in this period. The “Nazaret” was seen as one of the best schools in the city. University lecturers teachers were among its teaching staff. It was a fee-paying institution. Graduates of the Gimnazjum included Irena Trocka-Klechniowska, who very probably in the 1970s wrote down recollections of education between 1922 and 1929. A reading of these shows a school where education was expensive, a relatively liberal atmosphere prevailed, and teachers were not always well -prepared for their classes. [From the publication]
