Summary / Abstract:

ENIn the second half of the 17th century, the walls in the Vilnius Cathedral were adorned by a series of Flemish verdures depicting mythological scenes based on stories from Ovid's Metamorphoses. They were commissioned by the Lithuanian Marshal Duke Stanisław Kazimierz Radziwiłł (1648- 1690). According to the art historian Marian Morelowski (1884-1963), the author of the tapestry cartoon is Jacques d'Arthois (1613-1686), one of the most famous 17th-century Flemish landscape artists. Restoration of the 17th-century tapestry Eurydice fleeing from the snake was completed at the Pranas Gudynas Centre for Restoration workshop in late 2019. Before that, the tapestry had been restored at the Hermitage Museum's (Saint Petersburg, Russia) restoration workshop in 1955-1957 and was on display at the Museum of Applied Art until 2012. This is the third tapestry from this series restored at the Pranas Gudynas Centre for Restoration. Twelve historical tapestries from the LNMA historical textile collection have been restored at the workshop to date.
