Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article presents and analyses the archaeological collection of the Lithuanian Sea Museum. The collection was started in 1976, and it is one of the smaller parts of the fund, composing only 1.8 per cent of all museum exhibits. The collection consists mainly of archaeological research material collected in coastal or seaside settlements. Territorially, most of the finds are from the current region of Lithuania and Karaliaučius (Russia). These are exhibits from the territories of Klaipėda Castle and Old Town, Zatonas settlement, Šventoji (Janmarienburg) city and Kopgalis village. An exclusive part of the collection consists of antique and medieval dishes from the Black Sea. They are three amphorae and one pot. Other collections include archaeological finds such as wooden shipwrecks or artifacts from ships sunk off the coast of Lithuania. The collection has been assembled sporadically, but all parts of it combine sea and lagoon themes. Therefore, part of the collection is already on display in the museum’s expositions. In the future, activities are planned together with amateur and professional divers and archaeologists who are diving near sunken ships in the Baltic Sea. This cooperation is already turning into joint activities such as exhibitions and conferences. It is hoped that in the future the joint work will allow the museum specialists not only to gather information about the Lithuanian marine underwater heritage but also to create preconditions for supplementing the archaeological collection with new exhibits.
