Summary / Abstract:

2021 m. žiemą šiais naujai atrastais archeologiniais radiniais buvo atnaujinta nuolatinė ekspozicija. Šį kartą radinių kelias iki eksponatų užtruko vos vienerius metus. Reikšminiai žodžiai: viduramžiai, Vilniaus pilys, XIII–XIV a., radiniai, tarpdisciplininiai tyrimai. [Iš leidinio]

ENIn 2019–2020, archaeological excavations were carried out in the National Museum – Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania, in basement G of the southern block. Due to the high humidity and high destructive effect of groundwater, visual changes of the authentic stone pavement in the basement were detected. Therefore, in 2019, it was decided to carry out archaeological research in the western part of this basement, to fill the research area with sand and to install a drainage system. The research lasted for half a year (October 2019 – March 2020) and took place in the museum’s existing exposition – visitors could get acquainted with the nature and finds of archaeological research. Even at the beginning of the research, after finding the first more unique finds of the late 13th century – early 14th century, the idea was born to present them in a separate small exhibition. Therefore, preparations for the future exposition were started only halfway through the works. The fact that these finds were presented to the public so quickly is due to the Restoration Group. On March 11, 2020, the exhibition “Archaeological Discoveries: New Research at the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania” dedicated to the 30th anniversary of Lithuania’s independence was opened. It presented more than 200 finds found during the research and prepared by the restorers. A lecture presenting the research and found artifacts was prepared for the opening of the exhibition. While the archaeological excavations were still in progress, the soil was stored from the excavation site and its washing works were started. When washing through three sizes of sieves, even the smallest articles were found – 1.5 cm. diameter and height glass beads and their parts. Continuing this kind of work in the summer, it was cooperated with the educators of the museum – the professions of archaeologists and restorers were introduced to the participants of the day camp “Crown Academy” of the museum of the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania. After leaching the excavated soil, more than 900 finds were found, supplementing the unique complex of finds of basement G. In total, more than 3,000 finds were found during the research, a rich collection of animal bones and fish scales was collected, and more than 50 samples were taken for dendrochronological, as well as parasitological, paleobotanical and micromorphological research. After initial preservation, the finds were investigated in various laboratories. The composition of metal alloys, gemological (precious stones and glass), geological (a ring eye, spindles – identification of stones), chess material identification (ivory), dendrochronological, X-ray investigations were carried out.During the archaeological research, several other events were organized to publicize the material that supplemented the museum’s funds. On June 20, 2020, during the events of “European Archaeology Days”, several improvised meetings with archaeologists were held in the exhibition space. On September 26, 2020, several tours led by archaeologists were included in the farewell events of the exhibition week. In March 12–September 26, 2020, the exhibition was visited by 21, 242 visitors. It was a great success for the exhibition, which was held in a short time by the efforts of the museum staff, the work and attendance of which was limited by quarantine conditions. On March 16, 2021, these newly discovered archaeological finds renewed the museum’s permanent exposition, and as many as 188 finds became exhibits within a year. The carried out research allows us to take a new look at the development of the earliest brick castle in Lithuania and enriches the scientific knowledge of the castle inhabitants and their daily history of late 13th – early 14th centuries.
